Beverage & bar

What is the difference between a bar blender and a food blender?

Short answer

A bar blender is built to crush ice and blend frozen drinks in short, repeated cycles, often with preset drink programs. A food blender is built for longer runs with thicker loads, such as purees, soups, sauces and nut butters. Running a bar blender through thick purees every day can wear it out sooner, so match the machine to the work.

Front-of-house blenders often come with a sound enclosure, which matters at a bar or counter where guests are waiting.

Look at container size and material, whether the programs can be set to your recipes, and how easily containers can be swapped during service. Spare containers let staff blend the next drink while one is being washed.

Ask what volume a model is meant for. Many manufacturers rate their blenders by duty level or drinks per day, and a household blender is not built for a busy bar.
